It’s time for another Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, and today’s topic is near and dear to my heart. So much so that I co-host a meme that brings attention to some of these great older titles. [Speaking of which, insert shameless Throwback Thursday plug here.]
That said, if you’ve been reading my blog for a while, these titles are going to be familiar, because I’ve featured most of them as Throwbacks. What can I say? They’re awesome.
Top Ten “Older” Books You Don’t Want People To Forget About
1. The Princess Bride by William Goldman
Lots of people don’t even realize this is a book, and I find that immensely sad.
2. Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb
Still the best high fantasy series I’ve ever read, and the book I measure all other fantasies against. If you’re a fantasy lover and I haven’t convinced you to read this book yet, I’m doing something wrong.
3. Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card
I divide my sci-fi into two categories: Aliens and No Aliens. In the Aliens category, this book is my favorite.
4. Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton
And in the No Aliens category, this one is my favorite. If you’ve only seen the movie, the book is vastly different. Although the movie is pretty awesome too.
5. The Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton
This one bridges the Aliens-No Aliens gap, and so I love it in a different way than the other two. Also, I realize this is another Michael Crichton book. But considering I’ve read all his books (and there are many), the fact that I’m only putting two of them on this list actually took a great deal of restraint. I could make a Top 10 of just Crichton books that I’ve read over half a dozen times.
6. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon
Man, do I love this book. I’m not typically a historical romance kind of gal, but throw in a sprinkling of time travel, and you’ve got me.
7. The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
I don’t think this story is in any danger of being forgotten any time soon, but it’s definitely older and I most certainly don’t want it to ever become obsolete. Tolkien’s world of Middle Earth was groundbreaking and stunning, and I hope people love it forever.
8. The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
Likewise, I doubt the story of the Pevensie children stumbling their way into a magical land via an antique wardrobe in an old man’s spare room is going anywhere in the immediate future, but I just wanted to state for the record how much I adore these stories.
9. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
I love the story of the March sisters, and that through all their adventures and romances and hardships, their relationships with each other, and with their mother, is what’s really important.
10. Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
I love everything about this story. While it’s simple and sweet and old-fashioned, I can’t help but think that Anne herself is pretty timeless.
The Princess Bride..can you believe I’ve never read this?? 🙁 I can’t. The movie is one of my all time favorites..how in the world did I skip the BOOK? That’s one of my biggest pet peeves ever and I’m wicked guilty in this case.

Read it! You’ll love it, and it goes fast, and then you can stop being guilty!

Jennifer, I’m officially giving you homework. You are to read the Princess Bride right now. Put down whatever your current read is and devour this novel.
Great list, by the way. 😀

Some great books on this list!
I haven’t read as many Michael Crichton as I feel like I should have, and since I love Jurassic Park (the movie) maybe I’ll make that the next book I read.

Dude. Loving the Crichton representation on this list! If I could give you an Internet high-five, I would 🙂

I spent most of high school tearing through Crichton’s collective works. Love his books so much.
Anna of Green Gables is such a gorgeous book. I recently revisited it after about thirty years and enjoyed it so much.
Terrific choices! I love Little Women, Anne, and The Princess Bride too. I haven’t read Outlander. I may have to look into it, everyone seems to have great things to say about it.

It’s one of the most beautiful love stories I’ve ever read, but just a heads-up that it gets pretty explicit in some of the sexytimes. Just wanted to make sure you knew what you were in for, but if you’re good with that, I HIGHLY recommend it!

A lot of these I’ve been meaning to read (Princess Bride and Ender’s Game) and Jurassic Park is on my TBR list mainly because it was published in my birth year and it seems right that I read it (I never even watched the movies). LotR I haven’t read because it’s so intimidating… I will one day, I suppose. And Anne of Green Gables I only read this year, so some of her magic was perhaps lost on me, but I’ll definitely read it to my kids one day.

Skip all the Jurassic Park movies except the first one. It’s the only one that’s worthwhile, no matter what my husband says 😉
I haven’t read Jurassic Park, however I did watched the movie(s) and loved them. 🙂 Great list.

You really do!
It’s a scandalous but I’ve only read the last three books on your list- I’m relly keen to read Enders Game, I’ve seen it on two top ten’s so far, and I’ve been wanting to read it for quite some time now! I’ll have to hurry up and get it!

The Ender series is my favorite sci-fi series ever. I think it’s just brilliant. I hope you enjoy it!

I love the LOTR movies, but I must admit that I can’t seem to read the books. I keep getting stuck halfway the first book, so I kind of.. gave up on them.
I still want to read a book from Robin Hobb. The princess bride is high on my list, because I liked the movie. The outlander books are great, even when I stopped after the 4th. I really need to continue soon.
Great list! 🙂

If you like the movie, you will probably love the book. William Goldman (the author) wrote the screenplay, and you’ll discover that all the best parts from the movie were taken directly from the book.

What an awesome list! I loved Jurassic Park, Little Women, Ender’s Game, Narnia, LOTR and the Princess Bride. I have no choice but to assume I should read Assassin’s apprentice as well, lol. Here’s Ours

Great list! I loved Robin Hobb’s Farseer trilogy and wholeheartedly agree that it is one that shouldn’t be forgotten. Ditto for Anne of Green Gables.

I love Jurassic Park. I have seen all of the movies. I can’t remember if I have the book or not. I know that I have read some of Michael Crichton’s books.
I loved Little Women the book and movie.

This Princess Bride! Oh yeah! This is a rockin’ list. And Little Women. What a classic. So many good books that too many people tend to overlook in the face of all the new shiny releases.

I nearly included The Princess Bride in my list too! It’s wonderful, and having seen the film first I was surprised by how far the book managed to outshine it. I’m definitely keeping the two side by side to enjoy over the years! I also agree about classics like Anne of Green Gables – it’s amazing how many kids come into our bookshop and have never heard of these books. They want the newest titles with the shiniest covers, and it’s usually up to their parents or doting grandparents to buy the old favourites to pass on. Very sad… 🙁

Great list! I loved Assassin’s Apprentice. Robin Hobb is one of my favorite authors and the Farseer trilogy was one of my first high fantasy reads. I agree it shouldn’t be forgotten.

I think the book may be better than the movie in the case of the Princess Bride! Inconceivable!
We put Our favorite LM authors (Louisa May and Lucy Maud!) too!

Love this list! First of all, YESSSSS for Princess Bride! Awesome book, awesome movie. Second, I just added Assassin’s Apprentice to my to-read list to keep Jurassic Park and Outlander company.
