Welcome to another Top Ten Tuesday, brought to you by the masterminds over at The Broke and the Bookish!
This week, we’re picking book recommendations for people who liked a certain book, and while I’m sure my choice is going to be popular, I’m doing it anyway because when I finished this book, I could have used a list like this. Don’t get me wrong — this list exists, all over the Internet, and I’m sure many more versions are going to pop up today. But the ones I found led me wrong. They suggested books I didn’t like. So I’m making my own.
Warning: I’m going to genre-hop a bit.
Top Ten Books for People Who Like The Hunger Games Series…
…for the Action
The Maze Runner by James Dashner.
…for the Dystopian Setting
Delirium by Lauren Oliver
Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi
…for the Action AND the Dystopian Setting
Divergent by Veronica Roth
The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa
…for the Strong Heroine
The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson
Defiance by C.J. Redwine
Graceling by Kristin Cashore
…for the Plot
Battle Royale by Koushun Takami
[Disclaimer: I have not read this book, but I hear the plot is very similar to Hunger Games. I’ve also read interviews with Suzanne Collins where she said she didn’t know this book existed prior to her writing HG, and I believe her. Sometimes people just have similar ideas. It’s happened to me. It could happen to you. But I also think this list would be incomplete if it didn’t include the book that Hunger Games is most often compared to.]
Happy reading everyone!
I have The Maze Runner and Defiance that I still have to read so I’m glad to hear they are good for fans of HG. I’ve read most of the ones on this list and totally agree with them. Great list!

I absolutely cannot say enough good things about both of those books. I hope you love them as much as I did. Thanks for stopping by!

Nice list! I can personally attest to the greatness Maze Runner, Uglies and Divergent, all of which I read after THG. I’m going to start Under The Never Sky soon, and almost all of the rest are on my TBR list already.
You’ve got great taste in dystopian books!

Just getting ready to start Divergent. Excellent recommendations.
As for Battle Royale, you are not missing much. I saw it back in my anime days and I can easily say I wish I didn’t. It was terrible. The only comparison to Hunger Games is that it uses kids. The plots are different.
Yeah, I probably wasn’t going to see the movie — not big on bloody Japanese movies — but I figured I should probably at least mention the book, which I also haven’t read. I’ve seen so many “The Hunger Games = Battle Royale” rants that I figured that it’s probably similar enough to warrant a read from the megafans 🙂 Good to know I’m not missing much.
Enjoy Divergent! It’s one of those books that I felt should be read with a bucket of popcorn, if not for the greasy fingers problem.
Great list – I haven’t read most of these……feeling kind of embarrassed about my dystopian reads (or lack-there-of).

I really love dystopian! Lauren OLIVER!<3
I loved Delirium, but Pandemonium. NOPE. I really hated it. I also loved Divergent and I need to get to Insurgent soon. Great list, you have good taste.

I’ve not read Delirium and I’ve heard amazing things! I need to just read it already! I’ve been reading so many mediocre books lately, I need something really good!
I didn’t care for The Immortal Rules. I thought the main character did so many things OUT of character.

I’m a bit embarassed, I did a Hunger Games list, as well! Ours are completely different, though, with the exception of Battle Royale. I enjoyed it, the movie is far more stylized than the book, not a great substitute. I keep hearing great things about Divergent, I think I’ll finally put it on the TBR list. Great post, I adore dystopia!

I so agree with Delirium and Uglies, and I’ve been meaning to read Maze Runner and Divergent. The others sound great too!

I agree! Especially with Delirium. Sigh…I love that book. :'( I really enjoyed The Maze Runner but didn’t like the last two nearly as much. Fabulous list!

As always, AWESOME post! You are right on the money about The Girl of Fire and Thorns (which really stood out to me) and the Maze Runner. That book was fantastic and imaginative. I totally want to read Defiance now. Great TTT.

Although I’m not the biggest Hunger Games fan in the world I agree with most of your picks – especially Delirium. I actually I liked it a lot more than The Hunger Games and can’t wait to finally devour Pandemonium!

I have heart great things about the Maze Runner. I have to get my hands on a copy of it. And I still haven’t read Delirium. Everybody seems to love this series. Normally a good sign 😉

I was surprised to find out how much I liked Divergent. I was sure it would never match Hunger Games.
Thank you for all these suggestions.

Love this selection!!! I did mine on Delirium, a few similarities!

I loved Delirium! I have been wanting to check out The Maze Runner for a while now. I have not read the Battle Royale book, but I have seen the film – it does have similarities to the story of the Hunger Games (I have read the book but not seen the movie) but I would expect that the Hunger Games film is a lot more tamer.

This is a nice approach! I need to read Battle Royale at some point just so I’ll understand when people argue about it.
Also what about the Handmaid’s Tale?! Margaret Atwood. I think it’s a good throwback genre one. If you haven’t read it, give it a try!

I love how you broke your list up, it’s perfect! All of these books are definite reads for fans of The Hunger Games 🙂
That reminds me that I REALLY need to read “The Maze Runner”, like now.
