Top Ten Tuesday (July 17) – Top Ten Books For People Who Like The Hunger Games

Welcome to another Top Ten Tuesday, brought to you by the masterminds over at The Broke and the Bookish!

This week, we’re picking book recommendations for people who liked a certain book, and while I’m sure my choice is going to be popular, I’m doing it anyway because when I finished this book, I could have used a list like this. Don’t get me wrong — this list exists, all over the Internet, and I’m sure many more versions are going to pop up today. But the ones I found led me wrong. They suggested books I didn’t like. So I’m making my own.

Warning: I’m going to genre-hop a bit.

Top Ten Books for People Who Like The Hunger Games Series…

…for the Action

The Maze Runner by James Dashner.

…for the Dystopian Setting

Delirium by Lauren Oliver

Uglies by Scott Westerfeld

Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

…for the Action AND the Dystopian Setting

Divergent by Veronica Roth

The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa

…for the Strong Heroine

The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson

Defiance by C.J. Redwine

Graceling by Kristin Cashore

…for the Plot

Battle Royale by Koushun Takami

[Disclaimer: I have not read this book, but I hear the plot is very similar to Hunger Games. I’ve also read interviews with Suzanne Collins where she said she didn’t know this book existed prior to her writing HG, and I believe her. Sometimes people just have similar ideas. It’s happened to me. It could happen to you. But I also think this list would be incomplete if it didn’t include the book that Hunger Games is most often compared to.]

Happy reading everyone!

  1. Just getting ready to start Divergent. Excellent recommendations.

As for Battle Royale, you are not missing much. I saw it back in my anime days and I can easily say I wish I didn’t. It was terrible. The only comparison to Hunger Games is that it uses kids. The plots are different.

    • Yeah, I probably wasn’t going to see the movie — not big on bloody Japanese movies — but I figured I should probably at least mention the book, which I also haven’t read. I’ve seen so many “The Hunger Games = Battle Royale” rants that I figured that it’s probably similar enough to warrant a read from the megafans 🙂 Good to know I’m not missing much.

Enjoy Divergent! It’s one of those books that I felt should be read with a bucket of popcorn, if not for the greasy fingers problem.

  2. I was surprised to find out how much I liked Divergent. I was sure it would never match Hunger Games.

Thank you for all these suggestions.

    Here’s my
    Top Ten.
I hope you will stop by!

  3. For a YA lit class, I had to do a book talk program to a high school class and I did one on books for fans of the Hunger Games! I picked quite a few of the ones you did like Maze Runner, Delirium, and Divergent. Thanks for sharing!

  4. I loved Delirium! I have been wanting to check out The Maze Runner for a while now. I have not read the Battle Royale book, but I have seen the film – it does have similarities to the story of the Hunger Games (I have read the book but not seen the movie) but I would expect that the Hunger Games film is a lot more tamer.
